A Quick Look At: Alien Swarm
So I figure when I get to a game on my list with no discernible single player campaign, I'll play it for a bit and tell you what I think. The first such game is Alien Swarm, a free shooter from Valve based on the Left 4 Dead engine. It's class based, with two characters for each class. I played as Heavy Weapons Guy, or Girl, in this case. Equal opportunity miniguns! The game is heavily team focused, so I got ValveJunkie and, later, Natek and TDOT to play with me. I was, as ever, the screen door on their submarine. The game plays like a dual joystick shooter, with your mouse functioning as the right joystick and WASD as the left. I wish the game WAS a dual joystick shooter, as I feel I'd be better at it. It took some definite getting used to with the mouse, but I felt like I got a fair handle on it pretty quick. There's also a bit of auto-aim which helps, although I'm sure that goes away on higher difficulty levels. We played on Easy, which is a lie. That game doesn't know what Easy is, it's constantly chucking waves of murderous alien bugs at your face, and you have to weld doors and hack terminals to stay ahead of the horde. It's a lot of fun, though, and you can't beat the price.
Final Grade: A+
Tune in tomorrow when I begin my spy career in Alpha Protocol!
